Itinerary

Without a doubt the most beautiful residence in Rome, the Villa Borghese was built in 1613 by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of pope Paul V. Borghese to receive Roman society and to delight his friends with a splendid collection of works of art. Ancient pieces discovered in Rome plus artwork by famous artists of the time fill the rooms of this prestigious residence.

Located between the Flaminio area and the Parioli area where the Lucullo gardens once were, the Villa Borghese is known for its size and its access to the city.

The main building was decorated in 16th century style: the outside was covered with old sculptures, while the sober interior hosted the great works of art.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Prince Camillo Borghese transferred the family’s art collection to the casino. The gallery and the Borghese museum are still housed here today.

To build a residence worthy of his status the prince employed two great architects of the time, Flaminio Ponzio and Giovanni Vasanzio. The building was extended towards the Muro Torto and the estate was reorganized to include an English garden landscape.

The Borghese Gardens cover almost one third of the northern part of Rome – 2.3 square miles north of the Spanish Steps and Via Veneto. Its shaded paths, overgrown gardens, scenic terraces, and countless fountains and statues offer a refreshing alternative to the vivacious chaos of the city.

The gardens were opened early to the public and on special occasions the Romans were entertained in Piazza di Siena – a sort of open air theater, once the popes' preferred venue for public events. Recently restored, the Piazza glows now in its original splendor. There is a massive Egyptian obelisk in the center, estimated to be 3,200 years old. Created during Pharaoh Ramses the Great's reign, it that was brought to Rome by Emperor Augustus in the 1st century BC.

The Borghese Gallery houses a collection of early and late Renaissance artwork belonging to the Borghese family. These great paintings were once in the main residence in town.

Here, you have the opportunity to admire the Madonna dei Palafrenieri and Bacco malato by Caravaggio, Sacred and Profane Love by Titian, Deposition by Raphael, Danae by Correggio and paintings by Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Domenichino, and others.
